The Watcher in The Shadows

    Deadly Demon At Large
New York City. It conjures images of cars, skyscrapers, and civilization, but you don’t associate mystery, magic, and demons with the great city. However, you would if you were born into a stew of magical crimes, greedy wizards, and the magic gang wars. That is 13 year old Sacha’s life as an employee of the Inquisitor’s department, the magical unit of the NYPD. However, when Klezmer King, the greatest vaudeville clarinet player, dies suddenly, things get tricky. Unlike the last adventure, Sacha has some family issues to deal with as well, diverting his attention from the case. Soon, it is even worse, as the creature that attacked him in the last adventure has returned. Can he solve the case and escape with his life?
A rather average mystery, this book was still a good read, but I recommend borrowing it from the library. A fantasy/mystery mix, it was interesting with a moderate pace. The book was exciting but not an edge-of-your-seat thriller, while a sense of mild intrigue kept the reader turning pages. Parents should be warned that there is some swearing. Although I did not mind it, for those with different beliefs, there are also some religious elements in the story as the characters discuss their beliefs with each other. Overall, I give this story three stars for an interesting but “nothing special” story.

  1. Be careful when buying this book. There is another book by the same name. The one by Chris Moriarty is the one in this review.
